HOW TO SEAM CARPET

  1. First, lay carpet out in area to be seamed. Make sure all pieces are laying in the same direction.

  2. Allow about 1 ½ inches in both directions for seam cutting.

  3. Some prefer wiring a seam, rather than straight edging a seam. To wire, use a ball point pen, and run the tip of the pen down the length of the seam where you will be cutting. That will spread the yarn apart. Then use a utility knife to cut through the backing.

  4. If the pen does not go through easy, or runs jagged, we recommend straight edging.

  5. Lay the two pieces together, edge to edge. Then lay the seam tape underneath. Some prefer 6 inch, rather than 3 inch, because the seams will not peak as much. Have your seam iron warming up at this point.

  6. Start at the end where the nap runs away from you, so when you are seaming, the nap stays lying down in the same direction. Insert the iron on the tape, careful not to touch the nap of the carpet.

  7. When the iron can be pushed with ease, then the glue is warm enough. Move the iron no more than 3/4 the length of the iron, so you won’t have any spots that will not melt.

  8. Lay the two pieces together right behind the iron, and rub lightly with either your hand or a seam tractor. Then lay a smooth board on the hot seam so it has time to cool and stay flat.

  9. Continue down the seam till done. You may have to use your kicker to bump the carpet together or apart in places, so have it by your side.

  10. When the seam is cool, release it from the pad before stretching, or the pad may buckle, and you will have a nice wrinkle, and lump, under your carpet.
